A merry Christmas for Southie enterprise after neighborhood comes out following theft

South Boston neighbors rallied round a small enterprise following a shoplifting incident on Friday, resulting in record-breaking gross sales and what the homeowners described as a “Hallmark Christmas film” second. 

In a put up on Instagram, the homeowners of Love Baby — a store that sells alcohol, house decor, and flowers — defined that the “absolute curler coaster of feelings” started with a theft on Friday night time. 

In keeping with a Boston Police Division spokesperson, a teenage lady in a blue surgical masks entered the shop and ran out with three liter-sized bottles of Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The lady, believed to be about 14 to 16 years outdated, allegedly hopped on a crimson moped with a younger man and fled towards the Broadway T station. 

Officers responded to the 364 West Broadway retailer round 7:45 p.m. on Friday, the Boston police spokesperson stated. Their investigation is ongoing.

Proprietor Colleen Dunleavy and her husband have been about to eat dinner at close by Capo when Dunleavy obtained a name in regards to the theft and rushed out. Unbeknownst to her, Southie native Mark Rooney — who was sitting close by and chatted with the couple earlier — overheard what occurred and took it upon himself to rally the neighborhood.

“Such as you studying this, I felt / really feel so dangerous,” Rooney wrote on Fb. “For these of us who grew up right here, if a neighbor was in want, all of us responded.”

He introduced his plans to cease by Love Baby on Saturday to make a purchase order, including, “Whether or not it’s tomorrow, or someday within the close to future, I ask that you just do the identical.” 

Rooney’s put up shortly made the rounds on social media, and Southie confirmed up. 

In keeping with the Instagram put up, Love Baby — which began out in 2020 — marked its busiest day ever on Saturday as neighborhood members stopped by to point out their help. 

“We’re overwhelmed with gratitude for this help,” the homeowners wrote on Instagram. “It’s the greatest demonstration of neighborhood that we’ve got ever skilled.”

In a follow-up put up, they acknowledged they’re nonetheless reeling from the aftermath of the theft.
